MICHAEL LUKE PORTICOS MEJARES Michael Luke Porticos Mejares (born June 26, 1975 in Tagbilaran, Bohol, Philippines) is a Filipino singer-songwriter. With Luke Mejares at the helm of the group South Border, they released the album “Bump,” which contains 12 tracks. Although, Luke admitted that the album did not sell well, he got the respect of everybody in the business when the album grabbed 18 of the 22 major awards at stake during the 1998 Katha Music Awards, a counterpart of Grammy Awards in the US. He was awarded Best Vocal Performer by the same body in 2001, even besting his idol, Gary Valenciano. This was followed by a series of sold-out shows, out-of-town engagements, and concerts, until he was recognized as the Prince of R & B music. Sometime in 1974 at the height of dominance of the US bases in the Philippines, US Navy Capt. Robert Davis, an African-American descendant of Memphis, Tennessee, had a brief love affair with a Filipina, named Grace. The dalliance bore a child on June 23, 1975, who turned out to be Michael Luke. Unfortunately, the navy captain had to leave for San Diego, California. By a sheer bad fate, Luke never saw his biological father. To hide her embarrassment, Grace decided that Luke be known as her sister Elvira Mejares son.
